ATS examples and template study: 50 layouts tested in 2026

Fifty popular resume templates ran against six ATS parsers (Workday, Oracle Taleo, iCIMS, Greenhouse, Lever, SAP SuccessFactors) for 300 total parse runs. The headline: a single-column PDF built in Word, Google Docs, or LaTeX averages 92 of 100. A Canva graphic template averages 21.6.

Visual wireframe pass versus fail

Four representative layouts explain almost every result in the benchmark. The wireframe below each card is a reduced sketch of the actual template style, with the parse behavior annotated.

Wireframe A, single-column reverse chronological

98.4% pass

Clean reading order. Every section header indexed. Dates and job titles stay paired across all six parsers.

Wireframe B, two-column sidebar skills

54.0% pass

Left sidebar skills collide into right-column job descriptions in Taleo and iCIMS, scrambling the extracted text stream.

Wireframe C, Canva graphic with skill bars

21.6% pass

Vector skill bars parse as blank. Floating headshot box reorders text. Reading order is often reversed.

Wireframe D, single-column LaTeX

94.2% pass

Deterministic text order and Unicode-mapped fonts. Jake Gutierrez style and similar templates score highest in the benchmark.

Master 50-template category scorecard

Each category below rolls up six to ten templates. Scores are averaged across six ATS parser profiles for a total of 300 runs. Contact extraction accuracy counts the share of runs that recovered name, phone, and email cleanly. Date alignment accuracy counts the share of runs that correctly paired every job title with its start and end date.

Template category Avg ATS score Workday pass Taleo pass Greenhouse pass Contact accuracy Date accuracy
Standard DOCX single column 92.1 96 94 97 99.1% 98.4%
Google Docs Swiss / Coral 88.7 93 86 95 97.6% 96.0%
Google Docs Modern Writer 85.3 90 82 93 95.8% 94.5%
LaTeX single column 94.2 97 95 97 99.4% 99.2%
Enhancv / Zety 2-column PDF 59.1 54 48 68 72.4% 68.1%
Canva infographic PDF 21.6 18 11 32 28.4% 22.1%
Apple Pages export 72.4 74 65 79 89.0% 84.2%
Table-based Word layout 48.9 46 38 58 61.0% 52.4%

Three categories dominate the top of the chart: standard DOCX single column (92.1), LaTeX single column (94.2), and Google Docs Swiss (88.7). All three share the same shape: single column, standard fonts at 10.5 to 11.5 points, and no tables for the job title and date row. Below them, Enhancv and Zety two-column PDF templates average 59.1 because the sidebar collides with the main column, and Canva infographic PDFs sit at the bottom at 21.6 because vector bars parse as empty and floating text boxes reorder content.

Real ATS examples: 3 before and after bullets

The right template still fails without the right content. These three ATS examples are drawn from the recovery dataset where candidates raised their score from the fifties into the eighties with a single bullet rewrite.

Typography and section-naming rules that passed in the benchmark

  • - Body font: Calibri, Arial, Inter, Georgia, Garamond, or Times New Roman at 10.5 to 11.5 points.
  • - Headings: 12 to 14 points, uppercase or sentence case, consistent across sections.
  • - Section names: Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications, Projects. Avoid creative headings like Where I've made impact.
  • - Dates: MMM YYYY (for example Jan 2024 to Present). Avoid "ongoing" or "now".
  • - Margins: 0.6 to 1.0 inch on all sides. Keep content outside headers and footers.

Research FAQs

What is the single best resume template for ATS in 2026?

Single-column reverse chronological, exported as a text-based PDF from Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or LaTeX, with Calibri, Arial, Inter, Georgia, or Garamond at 10.5 to 11.5 points. Standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills), MMM YYYY dates, and no tables or text boxes. This pattern averaged 92 of 100 in our 300-run benchmark.

Do Canva resume templates pass an ATS?

Most Canva graphic templates do not pass. In our 2026 lab, Canva infographic PDFs averaged 21.6 of 100 across six ATS parsers because the vector skill bars, floating text boxes, and non-standard reading order corrupt the extracted text stream. A plain single-column Canva template exported to PDF does better (around 61 of 100), but a standard Word or Google Docs single-column resume is still the safer choice.

Is LaTeX actually ATS friendly?

Yes, when the LaTeX document is compiled with a modern Unicode font map (\input{glyphtounicode} and pdflatex or lualatex). LaTeX single-column resumes averaged 94.2 of 100 in the benchmark, slightly ahead of DOCX single-column. The classic Jake Gutierrez template (and its many forks) parses especially well because of its deterministic text order.

Does Word vs Google Docs matter for ATS parsing?

Both are fine when exported to PDF with a single-column layout. The main difference is font substitution: Google Docs will quietly swap a missing font to a default when exporting a template built with a non-system font, which can lower the score by 3 to 5 points. Preview the PDF and confirm the font before uploading.

What is the best font and size for an ATS resume in 2026?

Calibri, Arial, Inter, Georgia, Garamond, or Times New Roman at 10.5 to 11.5 points for body text. Headings at 12 to 14 points. Avoid script, display, and condensed fonts. Avoid font sizes below 10 points, which push line spacing to the edge of parser line-break detection.
